Gregory XI

Gregory XI
(1329–78)
   Pope.
   Gregory was born Pierre Roger de Beaufort and was a nephew of Pope Clement VI. He was made a Cardinal at the age of nineteen and studied law at the University of Perugia. ln 1370 he was elected Pope. He was the last of the Avignon Popes. While still in France he was compelled to wage war against the city of Florence, which led to a revolt in the Papal States. He was persuaded by St catherine of siena to return to Rome in 1377 to restore order, despite the hostility of the King of France and many of the Cardinals. His death was the signal for the Great Schism, with one Pope elected in Avignon and another in Rome. Gregory is also remembered as the Pope who condemned John Wycliffe.
